Joe Maddons first full season as general manager of the Miami Marlins has been a busy one.
Maddons tenure has seen a number of major moves made and, most notably, the team is set to open up a new stadium in downtown Miami for the 2018 season.
While the new stadium will certainly change the Marlins game day experience, it won’t have much of an impact on the way Maddons players approach life on the road.
According to Maddons tweets from last night, the Marlins players are all set to have a full-time medical staff on-site, which should help in ensuring the players will have a healthy and healthy recovery ahead of their next trip to the mound.
Maddon has made a number big moves since being hired as general manger in 2016, with many of those moves having to do with addressing the Marlins roster, which had already suffered a number significant roster injuries during Maddons time as GM.
One of those notable moves was the hiring of Jeff Sullivan as the Marlins GM, who will be overseeing the team’s first-ever offseason.
Sullivan was the general manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the majority of the last decade and had previously worked as an assistant GM for the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, respectively.
Sullivan’s hiring was widely praised by the Miami Herald and was met with mixed reactions from the Marlins front office, with some stating that Sullivan’s hiring should not have happened at all, and that the Marlins management team should have been in place long before he was hired.
However, the former Pirates GM did make some significant moves during his time as general team manager, and one of those big moves was hiring Jeff Sullivan.
While many Marlins fans may have been excited to hear about the hiring, others expressed concern over the potential impact that hiring Sullivan would have on the team.
Sullivan has made some significant roster changes throughout his tenure as the team GM, and while he has made strides in his first season with the Marlins, some believe that his tenure will be a significant one.
Maddon also addressed the current state of the Marlins team on Monday, calling out the lack of communication between the team and the fans, specifically regarding the current injuries to key players like Miguel Cabrera and Jacoby Ellsbury.
“It’s not a problem,” Maddons tweet reads.
“The Marlins are a young organization.
They’re trying to make changes.
But it’s a problem that I think is not shared by the fans.
I think the fans want to see more communication, they want to know what is going on, and they want that in front of them.
I’m not sure we have the right communication on that front, because that’s something that’s not being communicated.”
It’s likely that Sullivan will have to adjust his approach to communication if he is going to improve the Marlins performance at the plate, as the organization has struggled to score runs this season.
The Marlins are currently tied for the worst record in baseball at 18-56, and are only four games behind the Nationals for the second wild card spot in the NL.
Sullivan is expected to continue to have success in his new role, and hopefully, the new GM can do what the past GM did and change the team from the inside out and make the Marlins a more attractive proposition for fans.
